College Hockey is Changing

College hockey in the US is changing rapidly. Rising tuition costs, limited roster spots and an increasingly competitive recruiting landscape are giving players and families more reasons to explore alternative pathways.

One of the biggest changes came when NCAA Division I opened the door for players with Canadian Hockey League (CHL) experience. Beginning with the 2025–26 season, players from the OHL, WHL and QMJHL became eligible for NCAA Division I hockey, significantly increasing the number of high-level players competing for college roster spots.

For players who want to combine a quality education with competitive hockey, Sweden offers an exciting alternative – the opportunity to continue developing as a player while earning a university degree and experiencing life abroad.

University & Hockey

In Sweden, university studies and competitive hockey work differently than in the US. You apply to a university based on your academic goals, while your hockey opportunities are primarily with local clubs outside the university.This gives you the opportunity to choose your education and hockey path separately – and find the combination that works best for you.

Bachelor’s students can combine their studies with competitive Swedish club hockey at a level that matches their ability and goals. Male students also have the opportunity to play in the Swedish University Hockey League (SUHL).

The same opportunities are available for students pursuing a Master’s degree in Sweden.
